The Duke Ellington "Nutcracker Suite" is one of America's great musical triumphs. I first played it, and fell in love with it, when I performed this work with the Spokane Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Jazz Legend Gunther Schuller. Taken from the Suite that Tchaikovsky himself culled from the original Ballet, this work is perhaps the finest collaboration between Duke Ellington and his collaborator Billy Strayhorn. Playful, exciting, and at times irreverent, this 9 movement work is a study in orchestral colors and use of instruments. We will be opening the concert with 6-7 Duke Ellington standards, but not the ones you may be familiar with. Duke Ellington, arguably America's greatest composer wrote so much music that a much of it has been forgotten! 7 performances only!!
